How a Cat Meme Accidentally Doubled Our Website Traffic
Sometimes inbound marketing success is just a whisker away—literally.
Last Monday, our marketing team set out to launch a serious campaign about the benefits of cloud-based productivity tools. We had infographics, webinars, and even a downloadable checklist ready to go. But somewhere between uploading assets and scheduling tweets, our intern, Jamie, managed to accidentally attach a GIF of a cat typing furiously on a laptop to our main landing page. (We’re still not sure how. Jamie claims the cat “hacked the CMS.”)
Within hours, analytics lit up like a Christmas tree. Our bounce rate dropped, time-on-page soared, and we started getting emails from people asking if our software came with a free cat. Even our CEO’s mother called to say she finally understood what we do—sort of. The campaign hashtag, #PawsitiveProductivity, trended locally for three days straight.
Sensing an opportunity, we leaned in. We renamed our whitepaper “Nine Lives of Productivity,” created a “Which Office Cat Are You?” quiz, and sent plush cat toys to our top leads. By the end of the week, we’d doubled our inbound leads and learned a valuable lesson: sometimes the best inbound marketing strategy is to embrace the unexpected—and always check your file uploads before you hit “publish.”
So, if you’re struggling to generate buzz, remember: the internet loves cats, and your audience might just be a few whiskers away from falling in love with your brand.
